Excerpt: He knows he’s imagining things. He can account for every nighttime sound in the cabin, except for the crackle. [...] When the girls were little and shared a room, Ray could often hear three quiet voices talking to each other in the dark. The mysterious crackle has become softer since Molly and Katie left, and Ray’s absolutely certain that the sound is connected to the girls leaving home. The crackle makes him think of something impossible but present. Something invisible, but undeniable. Like gravity. It’s the sound of children growing up.

Excerpt: Of course, Fraser never got spit up on. Ray joked it was a sign of affection their son would only vomit on him. Fraser had got that strange look in his eyes after that.

It was meant to be a simple coffee between friends and it had started that way. They had had a good time; even Fraser had been smiling. It had been so good that they had invited Elaine back to Fraser’s apartment.
