Filed under: Due South, master lists, smithbauer — viciouscats @ 04:28

Currently 41 stories (not counting sequels). Last updated on 2008/12/25.

Note: This is a THEMATIC (character) MASTER LIST, NOT a rec list. And though I would definitely recommend some, if not most, of the fic here, bear in mind that quality of the stories varies.

This list is divided into several sections by pairing: Fraser/Smithbauer | Vecchio/Smithbauer | Smithbauer/Turnbull | other slash. Please scroll down to find specific category.

NEW – recently added to the list.

Excerpt: They came to a halt in the bright light spilling from the lobby. Ben kept his gaze fixed on his feet, not sure he was ready to see whatever was in Mark’s expression. / “You coming in?” Mark’s voice was rough, and Ben glanced up at him finally. There was something unreadable in the other man’s eyes, something beyond the hardness and fear he’d seen earlier. / “Would you like me to?”

Four Times Fraser Would Have Gotten Some If He Wasn’t So Uptight About Carpets, And One Time He Got Some Anyway by Belmanoir (or here)
Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio, Kowalski/Vecchio, Fraser/Vecchio, Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/Smithbauer, R, 2291 words, first time (F/K/V), a bit of angst, post-CotW (in Chicago). Summary: Fraser is uptight about carpets.
Excerpt: “You invited that Fraser boy over for dinner? Well, just make sure he stays on the runners. I don’t want him tracking mud all over my nice carpets.” / “Don’t be weird, Mom, Ben’s always clean.” / “Boys are many things, Mark, but clean isn’t one of them. And I don’t want to be getting any calls from that holier-than-thou grandmother of his asking why he wasn’t home before dark, you hear me?”

Fundamentals by Justbreathe
Fraser/Smithbauer, G, 957 words, pre-slash. Written for the ds_aprilfools challenge, prompt: full-contact sport. A/N: very underage.
Young Fraser and Mark playing hockey.

Getting In by Arrow
Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/Smithbauer, R, 8333 words, first time. A/N: Distressingly self-indulgent, long, and schmoopy as heck. And the guys just TALK TOO MUCH.
Excerpt: He doesn’t really need to break in. He could’ve just knocked. He knows Fraser is there because he saw Fraser come back to the Consulate with his “friend”, his ooh-my-old-friend-from-Canada-is-in-town pal, the one that made Fraser light up like an X-Men pinball game when you knocked down the glowing Magneto three times inside a minute.

Sequel: Ray must confront Fraser about the Mountie’s relationship with Smithbauer.
RayV is jealous.

Hawks and Hands by Dira Sudis (plus snippets in the same universe – prequels, or here; a follow-up snippet – here; ~8000 words overall)

Fraser and RayK are both professional hockey players. // Excerpt: Ben closed his eyes and swallowed hard, and, with Mark’s sleepy voice in his ear, began to feel the ridiculousness of his behavior. Nonetheless, he couldn’t seem to loosen his white-knuckle grip on the phone. He thought about saying I think I’m going crazy, but when Ben opened his mouth it was to say, “I miss Dief.”

I Remember You by Colleen Kane (sequels: Respect, Penny Serenade)

Line Of Sight by Kalena (also here or here)

Excerpt: ‘”I can’t sleep.” Despite Ray’s claim, Mark is not the type of man to complain of minor things. Fraser examines his friend, wondering what he’s leading up to. He doesn’t have long to wait. “Suck my dick.”’

Missing Pieces by AuKestrel (prequel to Strange Loops, F/K, WIP, password protected)
Fraser/Smithbauer, NC-17, ~11820 words, AU. A/N: This story is set in the same universe as Strange Loops, about three years before the events of Strange Loops take place.[...]
[Have not read] Excerpt: “Fucking refs!” / I can hear him, halfway down the hall. / “Where the fuck did they find those blind fucking assholes? Seoul?”

Much Like Wolves and untitled snippet by Llassah
Fraser/Smithbauer, NC-17/R, ~3500 words, AU. A/N: This takes place at the Conservatoire where Fraser and Mark studied, and shared a room. Fraser is a cellist, Mark is a trumpeter.
[Have not read] Parts of a WIP (Musician!AU) Llassah is currently writing.

Old Friends by Ultra Chrome
Fraser/Smithbauer, R, 599 words, angst, (sort of) PWP. Written for the ds_aprilfools challenge, prompt: secret lives. A/N: I committed Smithbauer. I console myself by remembering that Fraser didn’t know RayK back then. Plus, you just know something happened when Mark stayed over.
Excerpt: “He rolled onto his side and ran one finger idly around Ben’s right nipple. “Yeah, well, your stick handling skills are up to the job, but then, they always were.””

On a Frozen Pond by Otsoko (or here)
Fraser/Smithbauer, NC-17, 5800 words, first time, angst. Summary: Fraser and Mark Smithbauer, his childhod friend, meet again. What really happened between the scenes they showed us in ‘The Blue Line’. A/N: …I just had to explain to myself *why* Fraser waited for RayK.
Excerpt: Maybe you never forget your first. Your first … whatever. Maybe nothing else would ever feel as right. Maybe nothing else could ever feel as right.

On Golden Pond by A. Kite (or here)
Fraser/Smithbauer, R, 394 words, first time, angst. Written for the ds_flashfiction Canoe challenge.
Fraser recalls a summer when he was 16.

Our Track Record by Luzula
Fraser/Smithbauer, NC-17, 685 words, first time. Prompt: “Nothing is ever as easy as you seem to think it is”.
Excerpt: Meeting Mark again is like regaining a piece of a puzzle that has been lost since my teenage years. It isn’t as if I thought of him often, really, but there is still a connection there. I grin as I remember what we got up to as competitive young boys.

Power Play by HYPERFocused
Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/Smithbauer, NC-17, 1206 words, established relationship. Written for the dS Seekrit Santa 2007. Summary: Smithbauer’s back for a charity hockey game. Ray isn’t feeling all that charitable.
Excerpt: “He hates Mark, his good looks, slick, sleazy charm, like he still thinks he’s somebody. Yeah, maybe he was the first guy Fraser’s been with, and maybe he plans to be the next. Ray thinks Fraser would again if the circumstances were right. Ray’s going to do his damndest to make sure the circumstances are exactly wrong.”

NEW Practise by Luzula (or here)
Fraser/Smithbauer, R, 1300 words, first time. Warning: underage. Written for the ds_flashfiction Bad Sex challenge.
Excerpt: Mark continued on the subject of panties. Benton had mostly tuned him out, and so he almost missed it when Mark said, “You know, maybe we need to practise.” / Huh? “Practise what?” / “Um, you know,” Mark said, making a vague gesture. “So you know what to do when you get a girl.”

Something Forgets Us Perfectly by Nos4a2no9 (also here or here)
Fraser/Smithbauer, NC-17, 4481 words, AU, angst. A/N: This piece is sort of a self-contained prequel to the Rentboy AU, a due South story I’ve been working on for about a year and a half. It seems that believably turning Constable Benton Fraser into a male prostitute is tough–who knew? and I wrote this short scene between Fraser and a client to try and wrap my head around the concept. I hope to be finished the Rentboy AU by late spring (hopefully I’ll have a better title by then), so this will give you a taste of what I’ve got planned. Sex and angst, basically.
Excerpt: “The request for his company came down the whisper-stream of desk clerks and taxi drivers and hotel bellboys. His services were never in high demand, caught as he was in the negative space between the street hustlers on Halstead and the escort services that…”

Stalker by Rentgirl 2 (or here)
Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/various (incl. Smithbauer), PG-13, ~12800 words, angst, first time. Summary: Where, Fraser wonders, does one draw the definitive line between hunter and stalker?
Excerpt: There is no person who could be convinced that I have a reasonable possibility of capturing Ray Kowalski, at least not with the essence of who is Ray left intact. Therefore, I am not a noble hunter. I am instead, merely a run-of-the-mill borderline psychotic stalker who should no doubt have a restraining order taken out against him.

Thirty-seven percent by Luzula (or here)
Fraser/Smithbauer, Smithbauer/OFC, R, ~1800 words, pre-slash (UST), some angst. Summary: Benton as a teenager.
Excerpt: “It was almost unbelievable that 37% of all men had actually had sex with another man, but the proof was right here in diagrams and small black print. People in his class. More than a third of the men he met on the street. And yet no one ever talked about it. Why didn’t they?”

Unexpected by Nicci (also here or here)
Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/Smithbauer, NC-17, 15500 words, first time (F/K), post-CotW, some angst. Summary: Ray is having a nice dinner at Fraser’s new apartment when someone starts knocking on the door. This is the beginning of a painful voyage of discovery for Ray. Will he be able to put aside his homophobic reactions long enough to see what’s right in front of him? Only time will tell.
Excerpt: Ray swiveled round in his seat to watch as Fraser peered through the peephole, gasped in surprise and unlatched the safety chain. Then Fraser was being propelled backwards by the intruder until he hit the central supporting pillar. The only reason Ray didn’t immediately launch himself on Fraser’s attacker was because the guy, far from harming Fraser, seemed to be kissing the shit out of him.

Unspooling (The Black and White Remix) by Justbreathe
Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/Smithbauer, PG, 2500 words, first time, angst. Written for the remix_redux challenge. Summary: “When he was eleven, they moved to Inuvik and stayed for a couple of years. That was the first time Fraser saw a movie.”
Fraser and movie theaters.

Unthinkable by Keerawa
Fraser/Kowalski, past Fraser/Smithbauer (briefly), PG, 3196 words, pre-slash (F/K), angst. Written for the ds_flashfiction Refusal challenge. Summary: When Gerome Laferette offers to cast a love spell on Ray, Fraser refuses to even consider it – at first.
Excerpt: I hurried into the bathroom, locked the stall door behind me, and settled, shaking, onto the toilet. I’d been a part of three romantic relationships in my lifetime. The longest, with Mark, had lasted five months. // [remix of this fic - No Regrets (The Morning After Remix) by Akamine Сhan; no Smithbauer there]

Untitled by Kill Claudio
Fraser/Smithbauer, PG-13, 715 words, established relationship. A/N: teen!Fraser/Smithbauer and the prompt ‘blow’. I chose to interpret this as ‘blow to the head’.
Excerpt: The problem was that when Mark lined up the pucks and thumped them one by one into the snowbank, curving them gracefully through the air, it looked so spectacular that everyone wanted to try it. Not all the Inuvik schoolboys had Mark’s natural talent, and pretty soon the icy pond was a death trap as pucks went flying back and forth.

Untitled by Meghan Black
Fraser/Smithbauer, PG-13, 527 words, pre-slash. Written for the ds_flashfiction Naked Without Sex challenge.
Excerpt: “He still blushes at the drop of a hat, Mark thought. Or perhaps Ben was reminded that they were no longer boys in school together, surreptitiously eyeing each other in the old gymnasium.”

What It Is by China Shop
Fraser/Vecchio, Fraser/Smithbauer, PG, 1400 words, first time (F/V), angst. A/N: set after The Blue Line. Summary: “Ray put his hands on his hips and stuck his chin in the air. “You think I don’t love you as much as he does?””
Excerpt: “Color rose in Fraser’s cheeks but he met Ray’s eye, and when he answered his voice was calm. “Yes, he—he stayed over two nights ago, before he went home.””

VECCHIO/SMITHBAUER

Hockey As An Offensive Weapon by Izzybeth (or here)
Vecchio/Smithbauer, R, 964 words, first time, drunk!Ray. Written for the stop_drop_porn challenge. Summary: “Hockey’s dumb.”
Ray Vecchio apologizes.

~~~~~~~~~~
SMITHBAUER/TURNBULL
Untitled by Cmshaw
Smithbauer/Turnbull, PG-13, ~1700 words, first time.
Mark Smithbauer visits Fraser in Chicago and finds Turnbull instead.
Untitled by Llassah
Smithbauer/Turnbull, R, 659 words, first time. A/N: set while Turnbull’s still training, and Smitbauer’s just getting famous. [...] alleysex.
Excerpt: He wasn’t sure which teams were playing, just that they moved on the ice with vicious grace, and the crowd soared with excitement, washing him along in a tide of fellow feeling so long as he cheered in the right places. He had been given some leave, and thought he’d follow his feet, see where they took him.
OTHER SLASH PAIRINGS
Deke by Rhi Marzano (or here)
Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17, ~13400 words, AU, first time, angst, history (of Ray). Summary: “Maybe I could be the Walrus, but fat lot of good it would do me. At the end of the day, I’d still be the skinny Polack kid sitting in a police station with piss-soaked pants.” Hockey AU.
RayK is a professional hockey player, Fraser is a Mountie. Mark Smithbauer is in a het relationship with OFC here, but he’s Kowalski’s best friend and plays important part in the story, so the fic is on the list. *is inconsistent* :)
The Diary of Constable Renfield Montague Turnbull and sequels+snippet1+ snippet2+snippet3 by Llassah
Everyone/everyone, PG-13, 3500 words, post-CotW, established relationship, humour, unusual format. Written for the ds_flashfiction Diary challenge. A/N: This diary follows the natural canonical progression as outlined in Call of the Wild: The due South characters all move into a massive house together and all have sex. This, my friends, is everyone/everyone, and is taken from the private diary of Renfield Turnbull as they prepare for chistmas. The extract I am inflicting showing you has one entry a day from the first to the eleventh of December. The rest will be put on my livejournal, daily.
There’s some Smithbauer slash in all this lovely crack.
Ice by Kit Mason
Smithbauer/Dan Rydell, ~17200 words, crossover with Sports Night.
[Have not read] Excerpt: “You going to Anthony’s tonight, Dan?” Casey shrugged his way out of the jacket he wore on camera.
Of fire and roof, a universe by Denise Raymond and AuKestrel
Smithbauer/Oz, PG-13, ~13500 words, angst, pre-slash, crossover with Buffyverse, unusual format.
WIP? Oz saves Mark from a vampire in Toronto.
Unionville and sequel Compassion by Shell (short PG-rated F/K prequel – SOAP Note)
Bayliss/Smithbauer, Fraser/Kowalski, R, ~9800+700 words, angst, first time (B/S), established relationship (F/K), post-CotW, crossover with “Homicide: Life on the Street”. Summary: Tim Bayliss runs into Fraser and Kowalski in Toronto, then meets Mark Smithbauer.
Excerpt: Toronto’s a lot different from Baltimore. Bigger, yeah, but cleaner. And it’s not that it’s whiter, exactly–there are plenty of brown faces, but with more shades than most of my home-town. It’s got more of an international feel, I guess.
Untitled Mark/Todd AU by Colleen Kane (4 parts): mark’s story, written on the body, interlude: contact, todd’s story, written on the bones, epilogue: find the river
Smithbauer/OMC, Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17, 23300 words, AU, angst, first time/established relationship. Summary: Mark Smithbauer AU, with many Notable Guest Stars and Very Serious Issues. A/N: The first thing you need to know is this is an AU, centering around Mark Smithbauer from the episode “The Blue Line.” The really funny part is, TBL never happened. All other DS canon, up through “Hunting Season,” is considered, but TBL doesn’t exist. Mark never did any of that stuff, he and Fraser never reconnected in 1995, although they have been living in the same city.[...]
Excerpt: The kid puts on a seductive smile, one that doesn’t quite fit with his apple cheeks and freckles. That’s how Mark has always liked ‘em, though, not actual jail bait but you couldn’t tell just by looking. And if he wasn’t half in the bag, that smile might’ve worked. Tonight he’s feeling tired, though, bruised and old, with no patience for Todd’s relentless energy.
